Dhaka : Capt Sayed Mahbub Helal, a pilot of Biman Bangladesh Airlines, has been honoured with the "President's Citation" which is regarded as the 'life-time achievement" award for an airline pilot.

The citation was officially presented to him in Montreal, the home of ICAO and IFALPA, at a gala dinner on May 6 held at the Montreal Ballroom of Hotel Bonaventure during the 72nd Annual conference of the world pilots' forum hosted by the International Federation of Airline Pilots' Association (IFALPA) in the presence of 550 delegates which includes officials from International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and other industrial partners and stakeholders of the aviation world.

For the first time in the history of the aviation, an Asian pilot achieved this highest award which is a proud moment for Bangladesh and the national flag carrier- Biman Bangla-desh Airlines. Every five years the Technical Jury Board selects only one pilot for this award within the entire world's airline pilots community.

Capt SM Helal was President of Bangladesh Airline Pilots Association (BAPA) for several terms. He joined Biman Bangladesh Airlines in 1984. He was an elected General Secretary of BAPA for consecutive three terms and President in 2006-2007, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013.

He fought against all odds for the enhancement of professionalism in the pilot community of Bangladesh.

During his acceptance speech at the event, he expressed his sincere gratitude to the Prime Minister for her continuing support in improving the aviation industry of Bangladesh and thanked the Biman board, management team and the employees. He dedicated his award to the entire pilot community of Bangladesh.

Capt. Helal retired in 2014 from Biman Bangladesh Airlines as Commander of DC10 aircraft.

Currently he is involved in various philanthropic and social outreach programmes.
